Assistive Technology

Assistive Technology:

Southern Maryland Center for Independent Living provides a range of services to eligible individuals with significant disabilities when such services are needed to achieve the goal established on an Independent Living Plan (ILP). SMCIL recognizes the importance of accessing assistive technology early in the rehabilitation process in order to maximize choices and achievement of self-sufficiency and independence. Assistive technology is any item, piece of equipment or product system that is used to increase, maintain or improve the functional abilities of an Individual with a disability.

SMCIL can only provide an individual with the least cost modification, and/or assistive technology that meets his/her needs due to the fact that we have a limited amount of funding and we serve Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary’s Counties.

For more information regarding SMCIL’s Asssistive Technology program, please contact our IL/AT Specialist, Stacy Tobin at 301-884-4498 ext. 2.  Please be aware due to availability of funding and high rate of requests, there is a wait list for AT services.  Make sure you take a look at SMCIL’s new Southern Maryland Regional AT Loan Library!

Another available option for funding is the Assistive Technology Guaranteed Loan Program through the Maryland Technology Assistance Program (MDTAP) which is a program of the Maryland Department of Disabilities. This program gives low-interest loans to people who live in Maryland. Other people, including your family, can help you in asking for the loan. Not everyone gets a loan. However, this loan program has fewer regulations than regular bank loans, making it easier for more people to receive loans. Loan amounts range from $500 to $60,000.  The loans may be used for more than just AT. You can buy training to use the tools, extended warranties, and maintenance plans. Visit the MD TAP website or speak to a representative at 1-800-832-4827.

Assistive Technology Success Story:

A Calvert County Consumer who is a middle-aged husband and father suffered a massive stroke in 2014.  After years of rehabilitation, this Consumer was left paralyzed with minimal use of one hand/arm.  He was fitted to a customized electric wheelchair that allows him to use head controls to maneuver.  This is when the Consumer and his family reached out to SMCIL.  The electric wheelchair was life changing but extremely cumbersome and unable to be transported in their family vehicle.  SMCIL assisted Consumer and his family through our Assistive Technology (AT) program to modify their vehicle to accommodate his wheelchair.  Our Consumer is now able to go to doctor’s appointments and attend family and community functions without having to arrange special transportation and associated costs.

Consumer’s wife said, “thanks to SMCIL, (Consumer) was able to attend our daughter’s college graduation in Southern Virginia with me.  It was a proud moment for both of us!”
